A few days back, i was given a task to load Windows XP Professional on a Mac. Personally i’ve done it before but the challenge this time was to install it without bootcamp. Boot Camp is a utility included with Apple Inc.’s Mac OS X v10.5 “Leopard” and v10.6 “Snow Leopard” operating systems that assists users in installing Microsoft Inc.’s Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 operating systems on Intel-based Macintosh computers.

Now before people start commenting on why would i want to install Windows XP on a Mac and why i wouldn’t want to install bootcamp, it’s very simple. It’s what the customer wants. The reason why i wanted to post this is because i can’t find a really decent site that actually teaches a step by step on how to install Windows XP on a Mac without bootcamp.

All i can find in forums are people re-posting “use bootcamp“. Yeah i know how to use bootcamp but the question is how do you do it without! Some people just don’t get it. The reason i searched is from what i read, installing XP on a Mac without bootcamp will cause some drivers to not function. But it’s not true.

Enough said, lets go in with the tutorial. The steps are so easy and so basic but people make it sound like it’s so complicated. To get this done, you must at least have some basic knowledge on re-formatting and installing of Operating System.

1. Firstly, make sure that you have a Mac OSX or whatever OS that your Mac comes with. If your Mac doesn’t have any OS, install using the install DVD that Mac gave you when you purchased your Mac. As for my case, the OS is Mac OSX. If you don’t have any, find one.

2. Once Mac OSX is fully setup and functioning, insert your genuine Windows XP Professional CD and restart. As soon as you restart, start holding down the button “C” on your Mac keyboard. By holding down “C”, you’re actually telling it to boot from CD.

3. Next, you will see the normal Windows XP setup. So just continue as per normal Windows reformat. You might want to partition your hard disk it’s all up to you. In case you want to force eject a CD at any time on a Mac, just click and hold on the mouse and restart.

4. If all goes well, you will see Windows XP on your Mac. The OS is done but if you notice all the drivers are not there. You cannot hear any sound, the graphic is ugly and you can’t connect to the internet. Don’t worry, all you have to do is to install the drivers. For my case, i was given 2 DVD’s. Mac OSX install DVD & Mac OSX Applications DVD.

5. Insert the “Mac OSX Install DVD” and if it prompts you for anything after you insert your DVD, cancel it. Go to my computer and right click on your CD/DVD drive which for my case is D:/. Next click on “Explore”. Now you will see a folder named “Drivers” and in there are all the necessary drivers for you to install. Please make sure you install the right ones for your Operating System. For my case, i’m using XP so i look for drivers inside that folder that has the word XP in it. Done!

The only problem that i came across using this method is the camera/webcam drivers. The driver say’s it’s installed successfully but when i check on my device manager, it still shows me that exclamation mark. But if you test out the camera it works. Please do let me know if you have anything to comment on or share some tips. Thanks!

Learn about common Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts. A keyboard shortcut is a way to invoke a function in Mac OS X by pressing a combination of keys on your keyboard.

To use a keyboard shortcut, or key combination, you press a modifier key with a character key. For example, pressing the Command key (the key with a symbol) and the “c” key at the same time copies whatever is currently selected (text, graphics, and so forth) into the Clipboard. This is also known as the Command-C key combination (or keyboard shortcut).

A modifier key is a part of many key combinations. A modifier key alters the way other keystrokes or mouse clicks are interpreted by Mac OS X. Modifier keys include: Command, Control, Option, Shift, Caps Lock, and (on portable Macs) the fn key.

Press the key or key combination until the expected function occurs/appears (for example, hold Option during startup until Startup Manager appears, or Shift until “Safe Boot” appears). Tip: If a startup function doesn’t work and you use a third-party keyboard, connect an Apple keyboard and try again.
